Video Equipment for Traveling

Hey guys MAK here! As our latest series, A Summer Adrift rolled out we got a ton of questions about what video equipment we carry with us to document life on the road so I’m really excited to finally be sharing this with you all! Not only will I be sharing what we use and love, but I also share some things that are now on our wishlist!

CAMERAS

MAK07678.jpg

Sony A7III

These are our main cameras that shoot the best quality photo and videos.

MAK07680.jpg

DJI Mavic Air 2

Drones are integral for shooting landscapes to gain a unique perspective and add to the cinematic quality of our videos.

MAK07681.jpg

GoPro 8

The tried and true action camera for hiking. We also love using it for time-lapses when our other cameras are needed for other shots as well as its underwater capabilities.

Osmo Pocket

This little camera was with us for every hike, climb, drive, and backpacking trip of the summer. The gimbal makes driving and walking shots smooth. We recommend this camera if you are looking for a low-cost way to start making videos!

LENSES

MAK07676.jpg

Sony 16-35mm F4

Our long-loved workhorse lens is great from just about any scenario. In lens, stabilization makes footage smoother than it otherwise would be. Our go-to for if we can only take one lens.

MAK07677.jpg

Sigma 24-70mm F2.8

Our new favorite lens albeit a little heavier than the 16-35mm. We’ve found this focal length range to be incredibly handy! This may overtake the 16-35mm as our most used lens.

MAK07675.jpg

Sony 24mm F1.4

This is the dreamiest lens we own. It takes beautiful cinematic shots with a smooth aperture adjustment ring. It takes sharp images and with an aperture of f/1.4 it is our go-to lens for night video, photography and time-lapses.

Accessories

MAK07684.jpg

Rode Videomic Pro

Our go-to mic for just about anything from talking heads to run and gun shooting. As a shotgun-style mic, it captures most of its sound for what it’s pointed at and less atmospheric sound.

Mefoto Tripod

This tripod has been handy but it’s no longer good enough for the amount of use it gets. It was affordable and lightweight but it’s too light weight and can’t stand up to the windy conditions we often find ourselves in.

GorillaPod 3k

We have two GorillaPods one that we use. The smaller one is used for the GoPro and the 3k we use for the full sized cameras. The GorillaPods make it easy to attach a camera to anything or even use them as a handle.

Bottom holds cameras, orange one holds lenses and accs., black one holds film gear and small one holds hard drives.

Pelican Cases

We use a number of Pelican cases to protect our gear from the rough life they live out on the road. We have one case for all our camera bodies, another for all of our lenses and accessories. Then a medium case for our film gear and a smaller one for all of our hard drives.

Syrp Genie Mini II

The Syrp allows us to make more dynamic b-roll and time-lapses because it pans at controllable speeds using the Syrp app.

MAK07683.jpg

Zoom H1N Recorder

A basic audio recorder that we use for recording our voice overs. It’s simple, reliable and get’s the job done!

Peak Design Camera Clip

After countless miles of hiking with our cameras around our neck’s we leveled up with these camera clips and have been in love ever since.

File Storage

Lacie drive is the orange one, SanDisk SSD is the small navy one, and the tiny card is the SD card. And sorry this picture is out of focus (face in palm)

5TB Lacie Rugged drives

These are our hard drives for archiving all of our photo and video projects. They can be a little too slow for working on them directly but they are perfect for storing our abundant archives.

SanDisk Extreme SSD

These solid state drives on the other hand are very fast and are our go to hard drives for working off of for our current projects. We use both the 1 & 2 TB hard drives.

Lexar Professional cards

We don’t have a strong opinion on SD cards because we’ve never really compared them but we do tend to go for the Lexar Professional cards that are fast enough for our cameras.

Wish list

This is a small collection of holes in our gear or upgrades that we would like to make before filming our next major series after spending a summer shooting with all the gear that we’ve listed so far.

Owen and Chase flying drones

Peak Design Travel Tripod

After realizing that our current tripod is a little less robust then we need it to be this is the tripod we’d like to upgrade to. It has a bunch of nice features and is a big upgrade because our current tripod needs to be held down nearly the entire time it’s being used!

Mavic Pro ii

After having many issues with our current drone the video quality is far superior to ours and works well in low light situations that we often find ourselves in.

GoPro 9

Our current GoPro is cracked so we’d love to upgrade to the GoPro 9 to be sure it’s water proof!

That is just about everything! Soon we will be releasing a similar video that will take you through all of the camera specific gear that we have and use to document our travels including our 35mm film equipment!

Thanks so much for watching & reading and we will see you soon!
